Dundee to move forward with phase two of Eden Project development
Eden Project Dundee’s next phase of construction has been revealed. With an agreement to complete full development design and official planning, ambitious ambitions to establish a worldwide destination in the heart of Dundee have moved another step ahead. The Eden Project and its partners have reached an agreement on a financial package that will cover the next phases of the world-class attraction’s construction.
The £7.6 million investment will be used to complete comprehensive design and development as well as the work necessary for a planning application. This is all that is required to make the project ready for building.
Dundee City Council, The Northwood Charitable Trust, and the University of Dundee will all contribute to the financial pot as Eden Project Dundee partners. In order to increase the Dundee project’s prospects of success, the Eden Project will spend extensively through its development arm, Eden Project International.
The Eden Project Dundee, which will be erected on the site of a disused gasworks on East Dock Street overlooking the River Tay, is expected to draw more than 500,000 people each year and generate £27 million in revenue for the region. The initiative will support an additional 300 jobs in the supply chain and linked companies, resulting in a total of 200 direct jobs. The building phase is expected to generate £171 million to the local economy.
The Eden Project team is responsible for the hugely successful Eden Project in Cornwall which has turned an investment of £141m into a £2.2bn economic impact on the regional economy in South West England. Since opening in 2001, Eden in Cornwall has welcomed more than 22m visitors and in recent years has continued to see annual visitor numbers of more than a million.
“This is a highly historic occasion for Eden Project Dundee,” stated David Harland, Chief Executive of Eden Project International. It not only provides funding for the project until shovels are placed in the ground, but it also displays the city of Dundee’s and its institutions’ strong belief in our idea.

Eden Project Dundee’s proposed location on East Dock Street offers excellent public transportation connections, the opportunity for a new pedestrian connection to the city centre, and is less than a mile from the V&A Dundee and the railway station.
