Aabalree is a B&B that opened its doors under new management in 2018. Managed by Peach and Maggie, it was launched with environmental sustainability embedded in the design of the space and the services from the beginning.
Specifically, in an effort to reduce their food waste, they asked their visitors to order breakfast instead of offering a buffet. This reduced the related waste to almost zero (!). Despite that, they noticed the high amounts of plastic their ingredients were coming in. In an effort to utilise it, they started creating Ecobricks.
They also took out all traditional light fixtures and replaced them with LED lights,to reduce their energy needs and opted for shared bathrooms in order to manage the assets in a more efficient manner.
They kept the old beds (and fixed them), and created their communal spaces with second hand furniture and textiles.
Lastly, they created a simple list to remind their guests of how they can help with waste and energy.
